Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was an Indian educator and social reformer of the nineteenth century.
Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was born on 26 September 1820 in Birsingha village, Paschim Medinipur District (formerly undivided Midnapore District) in West Bengal. His father, Thakurdas Bandyopadhyay, was a spirited man from a poor Hindu Brahmin Bengali family, and his mother, Bhagavati Devi, was a generous woman. The family originally hailed from Banamalipur, which is now located in present-day Hooghly district.
