Ajoy Kar was an Indian film director and cinematographer known for his classic film Saptapadi (1961). He directed 26 films between 1949 and 1983. His 1961 film Saptapadi was entered into the 3rd Moscow International Film Festival. Ajoy Kar brought a whole new artistic expression to Bengali cinema and was a pioneer of Bengali romantic drama. Saptapadi was retrospectively featured in the "Homage Section" of the Indian Panorama at the 45th International Film Festival of India.
His 1971 film Malyadan won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali. Kar also directed Harano Sur, which was based on the 1942 Oscar-nominated film Random Harvest, itself adapted from the novel of the same name by James Hilton.
He was a contemporary of renowned filmmakers such as Satyajit Ray, Tapan Sinha, Asit Sen, and Tarun Majumdar in Bengali cinema, as well as Guru Dutt in Bollywood.
