Priya Saroj

Priya Saroj is an Indian politician and lawyer. She was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) on a Samajwadi Party ticket from the Machhlishahr constituency in Uttar Pradesh in 2024 at the age of 25. She is the second youngest candidate to be elected to the Lok Sabha in 2024.

Early Life and Education

Priya Saroj was born on November 23, 1998, in Karkhiyaon village, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. She belongs to a Scheduled Caste (SC) family. She has three sisters, including Vijaylakshmi Saroj, and a brother, Dhananjay Saroj. Her father, Tufani Saroj, has been a Member of Parliament (MP) three times and is currently a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Kerakat, Uttar Pradesh, since 2022. Her mother is Munni Devi.

Priya Saroj completed her schooling at the Air Force Golden Jubilee Institute in New Delhi. She earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from the University of Delhi. She further pursued a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from Amity University in Noida.

Political Career

After graduating in law, she began preparing for judgeship exams during the Covid-19 pandemic. Even after her election ticket was announced, she continued taking online classes for the exams. In March 2024, she posted on Instagram about starting her practice as a Supreme Court lawyer.

Priya Saroj first gained public attention while campaigning as a Samajwadi Party supporter for her father, Tufani Saroj, in Kerakat, located in the Jaunpur district, during the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

Priya Saroj contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the Machhlishahr constituency in Uttar Pradesh as a candidate for the Samajwadi Party. She defeated the incumbent BJP MP, Bholenath Prasad Saroj, by a margin of 35,850 votes in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. She is considered one of the youngest members of Parliament in India at the age of 25. In January 2025, she is also a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment.

Personal Life

Priya Saroj is engaged to Indian cricketer Rinku Singh. The families of both individuals have agreed to the marriage, with discussions held on January 16, 2025. The engagement and wedding dates are planned to be set after the current Parliament session, taking into account Rinku Singh's cricket commitments, including the T20 series in England and the Indian Premier League (IPL).

According to Tufani Saroj, his daughter and Rinku Singh got acquainted through one of her friends. Rinku and Priya have known each other for over a year now. They both liked each other but needed the consent of their families for their relationship.
