Amar Mitra’s family originally hailed from Dhulihar village, Satkhira District, Khulna Division, Bengal Province, British India (now in Bangladesh. After the Partition of India in 1947, his family migrated to Basirhat, West Bengal, in 1950. Amar Mitra was born on August 30, 1951, in Basirhat, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India. His father, Ashok Kumar Mitra, worked in the Department of Land Reforms under the Government of West Bengal, and his elder brother, Manoj Mitra, was a actor, theatre artist and playwright. Amar Mitra pursued his education in chemistry, which laid the foundation for his analytical and detailed writing style.
