Early Life
Uma Thomas was born on May 28, 1965, in Ernakulam, Kerala, to S. Hariharan and Thankam Hariharan. She completed her schooling in Ernakulam and pursued higher education in social sciences at Maharaja's College.
Political Career
Before entering politics, Uma Thomas was actively involved in various social and community initiatives. She worked with several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and community groups, focusing on women’s empowerment, education, and healthcare.
Uma Thomas’s political journey began in earnest after the untimely death of her husband, P. T. Thomas, in 2021. She decided to continue his legacy and contested the 2022 byelections for the Thrikkakara constituency.
In the 2022 byelections, Uma Thomas won the Thrikkakara constituency with a margin of 25,016 votes. Her main opponent was Dr Jo Joseph from the LDF. She is the only woman member from the INC in the Kerala Legislative Assembly.
